Canyon State Academy is a private residential school and group home for at-risk and delinquent youth located on a 180-acre campus in Queen Creek, Arizona. The facility is owned and operated by Rite of Passage, a Nevada-based company, under contract with the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) and the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections. The campus houses an average of 300 juvenile boys and also operates adjacent to Desert Lily Academy, Rite of Passage’s girls program. Canyon State Academy was formerly known as Arizona Boys Ranch, which lost its license in 1998 after a state investigation found workers contributed to the death of a California teen.

2024–2025

Between January 2024 and December 2025, police received 208 missing persons reports involving Canyon State Academy residents.

Some runaway cases evolved into exploitation and trafficking investigations.

2022

In 2022, multiple Canyon State Academy staff members were reported to the police for physically assaulting residents.

A staff member allegedly punched a student in the chest. Another pinned a student's face into the ground with his elbow. A third tackled a 16-year-old onto concrete.

The facility was allegedly understaffed and restraint techniques were ineffective.

In October 2022, a 16-year-old boy died from a suspected drug overdose.

Between January and October 2022, police responded to Canyon State Academy 239 times. Calls included missing persons, assaults, sexual assault, and molestation.

2020

In January 2020, a second student died from a drug overdose.

2003

In February 2003, it was reported that a female employee at Canyon State Academy engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student.
